The Irish tricolour flew at half mast today outside Burnfort National School and will do so for the next number of days as we commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the Mourneabbey Ambush where 6 Mourneabbey men lost their lives.
Next Monday the 15th of February will mark the 100th year Anniversary of the Mourneabbey Ambush. As this was a major moment in the parish during the War of Independence, a celebration to mark the 100 years was due to be held tomorrow, Sunday 14th of February, but unfortunately due to Covid, this has been cancelled. This however will not stop such a momentous occasion being marked.
Over the next few days, the boys and girls in the senior classes will be learning all about their local history and the involvement of these brave men in the ambush.
If you yourself would like to learn more information about the ambush, 'Mourneabbey Community Council' have compiled a magnificent video available on YouTube via the following link-
