On 4/3/21 5th and 6th class celebrated World Book Day online. We shared our favourite books with each other. On our live zoom on Friday we shared why we loved those books and we took part in a "World Book Day 2021" quiz about children's literature online. We got very competitive as a class but we all enjoyed the quiz! Here are some of 5th and 6th class' favourite books!

This week in 5th and 6th class we have been learning about weight in Maths, so Pancake Tuesday was the perfect opportunity to put our weighing skills into practice. All the children got a chance to make pancakes at home and they sent in some fabulous pictures and videos. Here's a slideshow of their photos. Warning: Photo content has delicious food in it so might make you hungry! This past week 5th and 6th class have been working really hard on their projects on European countries. We all did the project in our own way at home and online. We really enjoyed learning some interesting facts about these European countries. Here is a sample of our projects. We can't wait to present them to our class back at school!
Today was a very important day for the community of Mourneabbey and Burnfort. The 15/2/21 marks the centenary of the Mourneabbey Ambush where 6 local men from the Burnfort area died. The children read about the ambush and learned about the men who were involved today through their online learning platform Seesaw. Some children had relatives who were involved in the ambush. The boys and girls of 5th and 6th class researched these men and the ambush itself today. Here is some of their work.
Look at our lovely Valentine's art! We had a very busy December in 5th and 6th class. We began the month with a challenge. The students worked hard in December to achieve 30 hot chocolate points so they could enjoy a hot chocolate party on Friday 18th of December. The girls and boys enjoyed hot chocolate, marshmallows and chocolate lollies. The children worked extremely hard to practice for their virtual concert, where they performed the poem: "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore and sang the song "Little Drummer Boy!" In Art, we created lovely snowglobes using the pointillism technique and we created our own Christmas decorations from wooden sticks, recycling some ice lolly sticks. We wrote letters to people in our community and some of us have already received replies! We collected and organised lots of food for St. Vincent de Paul to help those in need this Christmas. Finally, we finished off our busy month with a well deserved movie day today. We watched the movie "Santa Claws" and we all really enjoyed it . 5th class student Killian McCarthy worked really hard this month to prepare an interesting and informative presentation on volcanos, earthquakes and tsunamis. 5th and 6th class enjoyed learning about the features of volcanos, earthquakes and tsunamis through facts, pictures and videos that Killian carefully researched. Well done Killian!
